WhatsApp Introduces Voicemail Feature for Missed Calls
We’ve all been in a scenario where we call someone only to be met with silence on the other end. Typically, when this happens, we hope for the opportunity to leave a message. However, this has often been elusive in the realm of messaging applications. While these platforms have gained popularity for calls, many, WhatsApp included, have lack the voicemail functionality until now.
Recent updates reported by WABetaInfo indicate that WhatsApp is testing a new feature that permits users to leave messages when their calls go unanswered. Not every beta tester has access to this option yet, but some users can already try it out in the latest beta release.
How the Feature Operates
When attempting to connect with someone via WhatsApp and they do not answer, the application will present the usual choices to call again or cancel. However, if you have access to the latest beta version, a new third option labeled “Record voice message” may also appear. This feature can also be found in your chat history with that contact, right below the record of the missed call.
Regardless of the recording method chosen, WhatsApp will transmit the voice note in the chat history, while also retaining the missed call notification. This allows the recipient to stay updated easily. Although this may not be a groundbreaking addition—since sending voice messages has been possible prior—it significantly enhances user convenience by integrating smoothly with the calling framework.
Should WhatsApp decide to introduce this feature widely, it would place the platform alongside others like FaceTime, which enables users to leave both audio and video messages for unanswered calls.
How to Join the WhatsApp Beta Program
For those eager to explore this feature and any other early access functionalities that WhatsApp provides through its beta, an Android device is likely necessary. Although there exists a beta version for iOS, it is often at capacity. There’s always a possibility for openings, yet previous patterns show this is rare.
If you own an Android smartphone, you can sign up for the WhatsApp beta program here. After becoming a beta tester, simply download the official WhatsApp app from the Play Store, if it isn’t already installed, or await the next available update. The beta functionality operates through the standard app, ensuring users receive new beta features through routine software updates in the Play Store.
