Wordle Hints and Solutions: April 4, 2025

Searching for the Wordle solution for April 4, 2025? You’ve come to the right place. This post offers clues, strategies, and, at last, the answer for today’s more challenging puzzle that took me six attempts. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Wordle #1,385! If you prefer hints and want to work towards the solution, keep scrolling.

Playing Wordle: A Quick Guide

Wordle is hosted here on the New York Times site. Each day begins with a new puzzle available at midnight, according to your local time zone.

Start by choosing a five-letter word. The letters will either turn green if they’re correct, yellow if they’re included but in the wrong spot, or gray if they’re absent from the secret word altogether. For further insights, check out this detailed guide, and this strategy guide for advanced players. Additional information awaits at the bottom of this post, after the hints and solutions.

Now, are you ready for some hints? Let’s dive in!

Unusual Letters in Today’s Wordle

Common letters can be identified from the historic typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Learn it! Say it like “Edwin Shirdloo,” as if he were a friend.)

For today, four of the letters are common, while one is less frequently used.

Answer for Yesterday’s Wordle

Yesterday’s challenge proved to be more difficult. The hint provided was “a sharp object,” and the solution comprised five common letters.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was SHEAR.

Basics of Playing Wordle

The premise of Wordle revolves around uncovering the hidden word for the day. When entering the game, an empty letter grid awaits you. Your first action is to input a five-letter word.

Based on the colors reflected in your guesses, you’ll gather clues: Green means correct letters in the right spots, Yellow indicates correct letters in the wrong spots, and Gray reveals letters that are not present in the solution.

  • Green: Correct letter, correct spot (e.g., guessing PARTY while the word is PURSE reveals P and R in green).

  • Yellow: Correct letter, wrong spot (e.g., guessing PARTY while the answer is ROAST shows R, A, and T in yellow).

  • Gray: Letter absent from the word (e.g., if PARTY yields all gray, the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST).

Utilizing this information, continue making guesses, aiming to land on the correct word before your chances run out. You get six attempts—after that, it’s game over.

Optimal Starter Words for Wordle

What should your opening word be? Highly effective starters generally include common letters, maximizing your likelihood of uncovering green and yellow squares. Even landing all gray squares from supposed common letters can provide valuable insights to eliminate possibilities. Although there’s no universal “best” first word, the New York Times’s Wordle-analysis bot suggests trying one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Moreover, an MIT analysis discovered that the following words eliminate the most options right from the start:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other strong choices may be ARISE or ROUND. Some players prefer using vowel-heavy words like ADIEU and AUDIO, though starting with a strategic focus on consonants, utilizing words like RENTS or CLAMP, might yield better results. Formulate your own approach and see how it unfolds.

Tips for Winning at Wordle

For avid Wordle players, several strategy resources can enhance your gameplay. This article discusses maximizing consonants to tilt the odds in your favor, while this guide emphasizes strategies revolving around the most frequently used letters. An advanced resource outlines a triple approach to gather hints while swiftly working towards victory.

The key difference between those who succeed in Wordle and those who do not is how effectively they utilize their guesses to ascertain the correct letters. If it’s determined that the word concludes with -OUND, there’s no point in guessing multiple iterations like MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; it’s better to combine the consonants and try MARSH. If the H appears yellow, you’ve narrowed it down significantly.

Furthermore, remember that the original Wordle featured a list of approximately 2,300 solution words, but post-acquisition by the NYT, an editor now selects the solutions. This occasionally leads to solutions that are more nuanced or even topical—like FEAST being the word during Thanksgiving. Thus, consider potential themes while playing.

Exploring Wordle Alternatives

If five-letter guessing games captivate you, check out the finest Wordle alternatives, sorted by difficulty:

  • Wheeldle allows you to tackle numerous puzzles consecutively.

  • Dordle and Quordle challenge players to solve two or four puzzles simultaneously with shared guesses, along with Octordle for eight and Sedecordle for sixteen.

  • Waffle presents scrambled five-letter words arranged in a grid; players rearrange letters to discover the solution.

  • Absurdle keeps players on their toes by altering the solution after each guess, though it remains consistent with past feedback—forcing strategic deduction until only one possibility exists.

  • Squabble invites competitive spirits to face off against others in a timed Wordle match; take too long to guess and you take damage—last player standing wins.

  • Antiwordle flips the script: you aim not to guess the day’s solution, and reusing correctly guessed letters adds to the challenge—the longer it takes you to lose, the better you’re playing.

Unravel the magic of Wordle and its alternatives with these insights and strategies. Happy puzzling!
