Understanding How to Play Wordle

The game of Wordle can be accessed here on the New York Times site. Each day at midnight local time, a new puzzle is released.

Begin by entering a five-letter word. The letters will display in different colors: green signifies you have guessed a correct letter in the right position, yellow indicates that the letter is correct but in the wrong location, and gray means the letter is not part of the secret word for the day. For further insights, take a look at our comprehensive guide to Wordle as well as this strategy guide for advanced tips. Additional information awaits at the end of this post, post-hints and answers.

Excited for the hints? Let’s dive in!

Common letters can be referenced via the old typesetters’ mnemonic, ETAOIN SHRDLU. Remember it! Pronounce it as “Edwin Shirdloo,” imagining him as a friend. Today, there are four frequent letters present in the word, while the fifth one is rare.

Yesterday’s Wordle Response

The challenge from yesterday proved easier, with a hint of “commonly found in English literature.” It contained four frequent letters alongside one letter that is also relatively common.

The solution from yesterday was PROSE.

Wordle Basics Primer

The fundamental objective of Wordle is to uncover the mystery word of the day. Upon launching the game, an empty grid awaits to be filled with your guesses.

When a guess is made, the revealed colors serve as indicators: Green signifies that you correctly identified a letter in its proper spot. For instance, guessing PARTY while the word is PURSE will highlight P and R in green.

  • Yellow indicates that the letter exists in the word but is not correctly placed. If PARTY is guessed and the word is ROAST, then R, A, and T will appear as yellow.
  • Gray indicates the letter is absent from the solution entirely. If PARTY results in all gray tiles, then the word cannot be PURSE or ROAST.

Using this information, continue making guesses until the correct word is identified, with a total of six attempts allowed.

Optimal Starting Words for Wordle

Which word should serve as your initial guess? Effective starter words typically incorporate common letters, enhancing the likelihood of revealing yellow and green indicators. If you receive all gray indications with common letters, that still provides valuable insights for narrowing down options. While no single word is deemed the best, the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot recommends the following starters:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

In contrast, an analysis from MIT—a research group that aims to identify words that maximize eliminations—suggests starting your game with any of these:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

Good alternatives also include ARISE or ROUND. While words like ADIEU and AUDIO involve more vowels, starting with a consonant-rich word such as RENTS or CLAMP could also be beneficial. Pick a strategy and see how effectively it works.

Tips for Winning at Wordle

There are numerous strategic guides available for those who wish to deepen their understanding of Wordle. For example, this guide elaborates on leveraging consonants to maximize your advantages, while this resource emphasizes strategies that incorporate the most frequently used letters. Additionally, this advanced overview discusses a three-step approach to gathering clues while optimizing your chance for a quick win.

The primary differentiator between those who triumph in Wordle and those who do not is the capacity of winners to extract information from their guesses. For example, if you ascertain the word ends in -OUND, waste no guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Instead, combine consonants and test with a different word such as MARSH. If H lights up in yellow, you’ve narrowed it down.

One additional strategy insight: while the original Wordle utilized a list of around 2,300 solution words, following its acquisition by the New York Times, an editor now curates the word solutions. This can lead to more challenging or topical words appearing, such as FEAST during Thanksgiving. Note that thematic elements might come into play.

Alternatives to Wordle

If the allure of five-letter guessing games captivates you, several exciting Wordle alternatives exist, and they vary in difficulty:

  • Wheeldle: Engage with a series of puzzles consecutively.
  • Dordle and Quordle: Tackle two or four puzzles simultaneously with shared guesses. For more, there’s Octordle, featuring eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16.
  • Waffle: This game involves unscrambling scrambled five-letter words within a grid.
  • Absurdle: An innovative approach where the solution evolves after each guess while still adhering to previous feedback. The goal is to limit options until only one word remains, ultimately winning on your final guess.
  • Squabble: Compete against other players with a timer. Prolonged pauses result in damage, and the last person standing claims victory.
  • Antiwordle: A unique twist where the objective is to avoid guessing the day’s solution. Reusing letters that have been previously guessed correctly becomes a requisite, working to your advantage the longer it takes.

Happy Wordling and best of luck with the challenges ahead!
