Understanding How to Play Wordle

You can find Wordle here on the New York Times platform. A fresh puzzle appears every day at midnight in your local timezone.

The colors of the letters will change: green indicates a correct letter in the right spot, yellow signifies a correct letter in the wrong position, and gray shows a letter that is not in the secret word of the day at all. For comprehensive guidance, check out this detailed guide to Wordle, and our advanced strategy tips here. More information can also be found at the end of this article after the hints and the solution.

The Answer to Yesterday’s Wordle

Yesterday’s puzzle posed a greater challenge, with a hint likened to “commonly found on a brunch menu.” This word featured three common letters and two moderately common letters.

The solution was CREPE.

An Introduction to Wordle Essentials

Wordle revolves around discovering the secret word for the day. When accessing the game, you’ll encounter an empty grid awaiting your input: a five-letter word.

The color cues provided will assist in unveiling the word: Green reveals a letter that is correct and in place. (For instance, if the guess is PARTY, and the actual word is PURSE, the P and R would light up green.)

  • Yellow indicates that the letter is present but in a different position. (If you guessed PARTY and the word turns out to be ROAST, the R, A, and T would show up as yellow.)

  • Gray signifies that the letter is not part of the word. (A guess of PARTY resulting in everything being gray means the actual word is neither PURSE nor ROAST.)

With these clues, make subsequent guesses aiming to hit the correct word before exhausting your attempts. A total of six guesses are permitted before the game concludes.

Top Starter Words for Wordle

What’s the best first word to guess? Ideal starter words often include common letters, thereby improving your chances of hitting yellow or green squares to steer your future guesses. Even if every letter turns out gray, that still offers valuable information for narrowing down options. While there’s no definitive best starter, the New York Times’ Wordle analysis tool suggests some good candidates:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Moreover, an MIT study revealed that starting with one of the following words eliminated the most possibilities in the first round:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other solid options include ARISE or ROUND. While words like ADIEU and AUDIO introduce more vowels early, beginning with consonant-focused words such as RENTS or CLAMP might also prove beneficial. Choose whichever strategy resonates with you and observe how it performs.

Winning Strategies for Wordle

Numerous strategic guides on Wordle exist for those keen on enhancing their game. This guide details how to leverage consonants effectively, while this one emphasizes a method focused on the most frequently used letters. In this advanced strategy guide, a thorough three-pronged tactic aimed at quickly generating hints while enhancing winning odds is explored.

The key to distinguishing successful Wordle players from those who struggle is the effective utilization of guesses to uncover whether letters are present. If you ascertain that the word concludes with -OUND, avoid inefficient guesses like MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; instead, combine those consonants to guess MARSH. If H lights up yellow, you’ve gained significant insight.

It’s worth noting that while the original Wordle employed a set list of about 2,300 solution words, under the NYT ownership, the game now features a curated selection. Sometimes, chosen words may be deceptively tricky or topically relevant—like the word FEAST during a Thanksgiving puzzle. Hence, consider themes may play a role.

Exploring Wordle Alternatives

For those who crave additional five-letter guessing puzzles, here are some of the top Wordle alternatives, sorted by increasing difficulty:

  • Wheeldle, which allows continuous play with one puzzle after another.

  • Dordle and Quordle require solving two or four puzzles simultaneously using the same guesses. Also worth noting are Octordle and Sedecordle, which involve eight and sixteen puzzles, respectively.

  • Waffle, which arranges multiple five-letter words in a grid for you to solve by rearranging the letters.

  • Absurdle, designed to adapt its solution after each guess while remaining consistent with feedback. Users must tactically corner the word until only one possibility remains, allowing for a final winning guess.

  • Squabble enables users to compete against others in a timed version of Wordle. Players incur damage for delays between guesses, and the final remaining player triumphs.

  • Antiwordle challenges players to not guess the solution of the day. You must reuse any correctly guessed letters, making the game increasingly complex as time passes.

Explore these aspects of Wordle and enjoy enhancing your game experience with various strategies and alternatives!
