Playing Wordle
You can find Wordle right here on the New York Times site. Every day, a new puzzle is introduced at midnight in your local timezone.
Begin by guessing a word that consists of five letters. The letters will change colors to indicate your luck: green means you’ve got the right letter in the correct position, yellow signifies a correct letter but in the wrong spot, and gray indicates that the letter does not feature in today’s target word. For additional guidance, refer to this playing guide, and my advanced strategy article. (More information is available at the end of this post, after hints and answers.)
Are you ready for some hints? Let’s get started!
Does today’s Wordle contain any rare letters?

The solution to yesterday’s Wordle
Yesterday’s Wordle was simpler. The clue was “as an action, may be vindictive,” comprising four common letters and one relatively common letter.
The answer was SPITE.
Understanding the basics of Wordle
The objective of Wordle is to discover the hidden word of the day. When you open the game, you will see a grid of empty spaces. Your initial move is crucial: input any five-letter word.
The revealed colors will assist you: Green indicates a correctly guessed letter in the accurate position. For example, if you guess PARTY and the solution is PURSE, both P and R will be green.
-
Yellow signifies the letter is indeed in the word but not where you placed it. (For example, guessing PARTY when the word is ROAST would make R, A, and T yellow.)
-
Gray indicates the letter is not contained in the answer at all. (If you guess PARTY and it’s all gray, the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)
Armed with this knowledge, guess another word, and keep going until you discover the correct one before exhausting your attempts. You have six chances in total before the game concludes.
Top Starter Words for Wordle
What should that first guess be? The most effective starter words often include common letters, boosting the chances of landing yellow or green squares to assist your guessing process. (Even if you get all gray from common letters, it’s still valuable information to eliminate possibilities.) There’s no definitive “best” opening word, but the analysis by the New York Times’ Wordle analysis bot recommends trying one of the following:
-
CRANE
-
TRACE
-
SLANT
-
CRATE
-
CARTE
Simultaneously, an MIT study determined that starting with one of these options maximizes elimination of potential words:
-
SALET
-
REAST
-
TRACE
-
CRATE
-
SLATE
Other solid choices might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO increase vowel presence, but it could be more advantageous to focus on consonants early on with starters like RENTS or CLAMP. Decide on your strategy and see how it unfolds.
Winning Strategies for Wordle
What distinguishes successful Wordle players from those who struggle is that winners utilize their guesses to extract crucial information regarding the letters present in the word. For example, if you deduce that the word concludes with -OUND, avoid wasting guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Instead, mix those consonants and try guessing MARSH. If H turns yellow, you’re on the right track.
One additional aspect to note: the original Wordle featured a limited selection of approximately 2,300 answer words, but since the New York Times acquired it, the game now includes an editor who curates the solutions. Some answers may be slightly tricky or themed. For instance, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving, so be mindful of potential themes in the game.
Alternative Games Similar to Wordle
If five-letter guessing games intrigue you, explore the top Wordle alternatives, which are categorized by difficulty:
-
Dordle and Quordle, where you solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously with the same guesses. Additional options include Octordle, featuring eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16.
-
Waffle, which presents several five-letter words scrambled in a grid, where you swap letters around to uncover the answer.
-
Absurdle, which changes its solution after each guess, while adhering to previous feedback. Strategically drive it into a corner until a single word emerges, then guess to win.
-
Squabble, where players compete against each other in Wordle with a timed element. If you take too long between guesses, you incur damage; the last player standing wins.
-
Antiwordle, where the goal is to avoid guessing the day’s solution. You’re required to reuse any letters already guessed correctly, so the longer you take, the better you are playing.
