Your first step is to guess a five-letter word. Depending on your guess, the letters will become green if correct, yellow if the letter exists in the word but not in the right spot, or gray if the letter isn’t in today’s answer at all. For further guidance, check our Wordle strategy guide here, and my in-depth tips can be found here. (Additional resources to assist you are available at the end of this article.)

Yesterday’s Wordle solution
The previous day’s Wordle proved more challenging. The clue was “may start a relationship, metaphorically,” involving three common letters, one relatively common letter, and one rarer letter.
The answer was SPARK.
Understanding the Basics of Wordle
The goal of Wordle is to deduce the day’s secret word. Upon starting the game, you will see an empty letter grid. Your first move is to input any five-letter word.
The revealed colors act as clues: Green indicates a correct letter in the right position (like the case of PARTY suggesting PURSE), Yellow means the letter exists in the word but not where guessed (such as guessing PARTY when the answer is ROAST), while Gray denotes a letter not present in the solution at all.
- Green means the letter is correct and in its rightful position.
- Yellow indicates the letter is in the word but in a different spot.
- Gray shows the letter does not appear in the answer.
Utilize this information to make successive guesses, working to identify the secret word within six attempts.
Optimal Starter Words for Wordle
What should be your initial guess? The most effective starting words often include common letters, enhancing the likelihood of landing on yellow or green indicators to guide subsequent guesses. No single “best” guess exists, but analysis from the New York Times suggests starting with options such as:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
Furthermore, an MIT study discovered optimizing your first guess to eliminate the most possibilities using words like:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Other solid choices include ARISE or ROUND. While choices like ADIEU and AUDIO provide more vowel options, beginning with consonant-heavy guesses, such as RENTS or CLAMP, may also be strategic. Choose your approach and evaluate the outcomes.
Securing Victory in Wordle
For those dedicated to mastering Wordle, additional strategy guides are available to enhance your game. One provides insight on utilizing consonants effectively, while another emphasizes a method focused on frequently used letters. More advanced players may find value in techniques that maximize efficiency in their guesses.
The key differentiator between victors and those who fail is the capacity to extract information about the word through each guess. If you determine the word ends in -OUND, there’s no need to waste guesses on options like MOUND or SOUND; instead, combine and deduce. A guess like MARSH can reveal critical information.
It’s worth noting that the original Wordle featured a static list of solutions, but since changing hands to the New York Times, the game now has an editorial team selecting solutions, which may sometimes veer into quirky or thematic territory.
Alternative Games to Wordle
If the joy of five-letter guessing games beckons, explore these noteworthy alternatives, ranked by difficulty:
- Wheeldle, allowing for sequential puzzles
- Dordle and Quordle, where two or four puzzles challenge your wits with the same guesses. Additional variants include Octordle (eight puzzles) and Sedecordle (16 puzzles).
- Waffle, which challenges you with scrambled five-letter words in a grid.
- Absurdle makes the challenge interesting by changing the solution with every guess.
- Squabble allows a competitive spin by letting you play Wordle against others under time pressure.
- Antiwordle, where the goal shifts to not guessing the correct solution.
