Wordle Gameplay Guide

You can find Wordle here on the New York Times website. Each day, a new puzzle becomes available at midnight based on your local time.

The game begins with you attempting to guess a five-letter word. Each letter in your guess will change color: green indicates a correct letter in the right position, yellow shows a correct letter in the wrong location, and gray signifies that the letter is not in the solution word at all. For additional strategies, refer to this guide on Wordle and this strategy resource for advanced players. (More detailed information can be found at the bottom of this article post the hints and solutions.)

Yesterday’s Wordle Solution

The previous day’s Wordle offered a moderate level of challenge. The hint was “something to meet”, and the answer included four common letters plus one that was less common.

The solution for yesterday was QUOTA.

Essential Wordle Basics

The premise of Wordle revolves around guessing the hidden word of the day. When the game launches, you’ll be greeted by an empty letter grid. It’s your turn to make the first move: input any five-letter word.

Utilize the color feedback received to glean information about the target word.
Green indicates a correct letter in the right spot.
Yellow signals a correct letter, but inaccurately placed.
Gray shows that the letter doesn’t appear in the solution at all.

  • If your guess yields all gray letters, it implies that none of those letters are in the answer.
  • Use the information from your guesses to strategically suggest additional words, aiming for the correct solution before your six attempts run out.

Optimal Starter Words for Wordle

What should serve as your initial guess? The ideal starting words are those rich in common letters, increasing the likelihood of receiving yellow and green indicators during your guesses. While there’s no single universally accepted best starter, the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot suggests these words to get you started:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Additionally, analysis from MIT revealed that choosing words like these can maximize your chances of eliminating possible solutions on the first try:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other effective options might include ARISE or ROUND. Starting with vowels like ADIEU and AUDIO can be helpful, but some experts argue prioritizing consonants might be a more strategic approach, using starter words like RENTS or CLAMP. Experiment with your style and see what works best!

Strategies for Winning at Wordle

A variety of strategy guides on Wordle can enhance your gameplay if you’re looking to improve. For instance, one guide offers insight on utilizing consonants effectively while another one emphasizes a strategy centered around frequently used letters. For advanced guidance, a three-part approach is outlined to help maximize your chances of solving the puzzle efficiently.

The key distinction between successful Wordle players and those who struggle is how information is gathered from previous guesses. For instance, if a word clearly ends with -OUND, avoid wasting your guesses on similar words like MOUND, ROUND, and HOUND; instead, combine letters and guess a different option like MARSH. If any of your letters turn yellow, that gives you additional information about the eventual answer.

It’s also important to note that after being acquired by the New York Times, the game’s editor curates a selection of solutions, which may include occasional tricky or topical words, unlike the original list of roughly 2,300 words. Thus, be aware of any thematic elements that could influence the chosen solution.

Alternative Games to Wordle

If five-letter word guessing games ignite your interest, consider trying out some alternative options. Here’s a selection based on their difficulty ratings:

  • Wheeldle allows you to play consecutive puzzles.

  • In Dordle and Quordle, you tackle two and four puzzles simultaneously, respectively, using the same guesses. For those seeking challenge, Octordle includes eight puzzles, while Sedecordle offers 16!

  • Waffle presents you with multiple five-letter words arranged in a grid, where you swap letters until you find all the correct words.

  • For a twist, try Absurdle, which changes solutions with each guess while remaining consistent with prior feedback; outsmart it until you arrive at the only possible word left!

  • Squabble allows you to compete against others under time pressure; fail to guess in time, and you incur damage!

  • Antiwordle flips the objective by making you avoid the target word; reusing correct letters makes the challenge even harder the longer you take.

Embrace these strategies, hints, and alternative games to amplify your Wordle experience. Happy solving!
