Wordle Basics: An Overview
The aim of Wordle is to identify the secret word of the day. Upon launching the game, an empty grid of letters is presented. It is up to you to make the first guess by typing a five-letter word.
Based on the color feedback after your guess, you can glean hints about the secret word: Green indicates a correct letter in the accurate position (for instance, guessing PARTY when the word is PURSE would yield green for P and R).
- Yellow indicates the letter is part of the word but not in the guessed position (e.g., guessing PARTY for the word ROAST would reveal yellow for R, A, and T).
- Gray means that letter is not part of the solution at all (e.g., if PARTY results in all gray, then the solution can’t be PURSE or ROAST).
Keeping this in mind, make your next guesses, aiming to find the word before exhausting your six attempts.
Optimal Starter Words for Wordle
What should your first guess be? The most effective starter words typically employ common letters, increasing the likelihood of obtaining yellow and green squares that guide your next guesses. There isn’t a universal “best” starting word, but an analysis from the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot suggests starting with one of the following:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
Furthermore, an MIT study discovered that utilizing one of these words can help eliminate the highest number of possibilities in your initial guess:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Additionally, good options may include ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO can incorporate more vowels into your guesses, but many prefer to begin with consonants using starter words like RENTS or CLAMP. Determine your strategy and see what works best.
Winning Strategies for Wordle
For those invested in refining their Wordle skills, guides are available that delve into strategies. One guide explores utilizing consonants effectively, while another focuses on leveraging common letters. An advanced guide outlines a comprehensive three-pronged strategy for seeking hints while maximizing your chances of victory.
What distinguishes successful players from those less fortunate is the capacity to gather insights from their guesses about which letters are contained within the word. For instance, if you deduce that the word ends with -OUND, avoid wasting guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; rather, mix those consonants and try MARSH. If H turns yellow, you gain valuable insight into the solution.
Finally, note that the original Wordle utilized a fixed list of around 2,300 words. However, following its acquisition by the NYT, the game now features an editor who selects solutions. Consequently, some words may be unexpected or thematic; for instance, FEAST was the solution during Thanksgiving. Always be prepared for themes to be at play!
Alternatives to Wordle
If the five-letter guessing games have captured your interest, consider exploring some of the top Wordle alternatives, sorted by difficulty:
- Wheeldle lets you take on multiple puzzles consecutively.
- Dordle and Quordle require you to solve two or four puzzles simultaneously, using the same guesses. There’s also Octordle and Sedecordle, featuring eight and sixteen puzzles, respectively.
- Waffle, wherein you rearrange scrambled five-letter words in a grid until you find the correct ones.
- Absurdle, where the solution changes after each guess, but must remain aligned with prior feedback. Your goal is to constrain it until only one word is left, then successfully guess it.
- Squabble allows you to compete against others in Wordle with a time limit, where delays result in penalties and the last player standing wins.
- Antiwordle challenges you to avoid guessing the day’s solution. You need to reuse any correctly guessed letters, which means that the longer it takes to finish, the better you are at the game.
