Unveiling the New Features of Android 16 Beta
Android 16 is on track to provide a refreshing redesign for the operating system, with its latest beta version introducing enhancements aimed at improving user experience. One of the standout features is the reintroduction of lock screen widgets, previously restricted to tablets. Additionally, the latest iteration emphasizes stronger security protocols while also making strides in aesthetic appeal, particularly through a revamped dark mode.
The anticipated stable version of Android 16 is expected to launch in December. However, those enrolled in the Android beta program can start exploring these exciting features via the QPR2 Beta 1, the first beta of this second Quarterly Platform Release cycle.
Currently, eligible Pixel devices can access the Android 16 Beta. Interested users can enroll here. Keep in mind that the usual caveats regarding beta software stability still apply.

By heading to Settings > Display & Touch, users will discover the new Widget on Lock Screen option. This allows for fully interactive widgets on the lock screen, providing essential information without unlocking the device.
After activating this feature, there’s a configurable setting for When to Automatically Show, letting users determine when widgets will appear—such as only during charging. To view widgets manually, simply swipe inward from the right edge of the lock screen.
Multiple pages of widgets are now possible, accommodating up to three full-sized widgets per page. A long-press on the widget area will allow users to unlock the phone and add more options.

A new addition called Expanded is making its way to Android’s Dark Theme, found under Settings > Display & Touch > Dark Theme.
Once activated, this option enables Android to automatically apply the dark theme across a broader range of apps for better accessibility. This feature caters to users with low vision, photosensitivity, or those simply favoring a dark interface. Essentially, it will enforce dark mode in applications that previously lacked this feature.
Enhanced Security via Identity Check
The Identity Check functionality within Android adds an extra layer of security, requiring biometric verification (fingerprint or facial recognition) alongside the PIN when executing sensitive system tasks. With recent updates, Google is expanding these biometric requirements to any place where Fingerprint and Face Unlock are applicable, including various apps.
This change’s effectiveness will depend on app compatibility with biometric authentication. Apps that only rely on a PIN may not experience any changes, but those supporting biometrics will now require this added step. While this may seem inconvenient, it significantly enhances security, especially for sensitive applications like password managers. More details can be found in the Identity Check guide.
Additional Features and Improvements
The recent Android beta update introduces several minor but impactful enhancements. Notable mentions include:
-
SDR/HDR Brightness Control: A new Enhanced HDR brightness slider in the Display & Touch settings allows users to manage the brightness of HDR content, preventing it from becoming overly intense.
-
90:10 Split-Screen Ratio: This update permits one app to occupy just 10% of the screen while another takes up the remaining 90%.
-
Full Linux Desktop App Support: Display support for Linux applications is being integrated into Android, allowing users to run full-fledged Linux apps on their Pixel devices, though some setup is required. More information can be found here.
