New Features for AirPods Announced at WWDC 2025
At the recent WWDC 2025 keynote, Apple introduced several enhancements that significantly boost the functionality of AirPods. Among the most exciting announcements is the ability to use AirPods as a remote control for your camera, coupled with a forthcoming feature that promises “studio-quality” audio recording. These updates will be applicable to the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4, and the new AirPods 4 equipped with active noise cancellation.
Transforming AirPods into a Camera Remote
The newly integrated camera remote functionality allows users to manage their device’s camera from a distance. This feature enables users to utilize their AirPods as a shutter button for iPhones or iPads. Once this upgrade arrives alongside iOS 26 this fall, users will be able to press the stem of the AirPods to capture images or initiate and halt video recordings. According to Apple, a simple press-and-hold action on the AirPods stem will facilitate photo captures or video toggling based on the camera application’s mode. This convenient feature is particularly useful for group shots, creating content for TikTok, or for capturing images from awkward angles. Additionally, Apple has indicated that this functionality will extend to various third-party camera applications.
Enhancing Audio Recording Quality
During the keynote, Apple shared that the same trio of AirPods models would soon enable studio-quality audio recording capabilities. A future firmware update will allow creators to produce recordings featuring “studio-quality vocals” via their AirPods, along with enhancements to Voice Isolation technology that will improve the clarity of voice audio. Apple is marketing the AirPods as an ideal microphone for podcasters, singers, and content creators; however, there remains a level of skepticism regarding the actual efficacy of this feature until it is observed in practical use.
The improved microphone quality will seamlessly function with iPhones, iPads, and Macs, supporting both Apple’s proprietary applications and various third-party software. Apple assures users that the enhancement will deliver a more authentic vocal texture and improved audio quality during phone calls, FaceTime conversations, and within CallKit-compatible applications. The advancements stem from the capabilities provided by the H2 chip in the AirPods, along with beamforming microphones and sophisticated computational audio technology.
