Google Introduces Agentic AI Features in Gemini App for 2025
As we step into 2025, Google is set to launch its innovative agentic AI functionality within the Gemini application. Previously discussed in passing, the tech giant is now poised to roll this feature out for mainstream use. During the Google I/O 2025 keynote address, it was revealed that this capability enables the AI to navigate the web independently and perform various tasks on behalf of users. Similar to OpenAI’s Operator, the Gemini AI can transform a user’s request into an actionable checklist and execute those actions autonomously.
Google’s Agent Mode is designed to leverage functionalities such as real-time web browsing and extensive research, integrating data from Google’s suite of applications to meet its online objectives. This advanced model claims to execute complex, multi-step tasks from initiation to completion with minimal user intervention.

While comprehensive details are still emerging regarding this feature’s operation, a real-life demonstration was presented at the event. CEO Sundar Pichai tasked Gemini with locating a rental apartment that met specific criteria—budget limitations and access to laundry facilities. The AI efficiently created a step-by-step plan, which included opening a browser, navigating to Zillow, searching for appropriate listings, and even scheduling a tour. This efficiency is powered by Google’s backend integration with the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a method introduced by Anthropic that allows applications to seamlessly connect with AI tools. Such integration significantly enhances reliability over traditional methods that require manual web browsing and button clicking.
Agentic functionalities will not be exclusive to the Gemini app; they are also making their way into Chrome and Google Search. For instance, these features will assist users in searching for ticketed events in the background.

As highlighted by Google, Agent Mode is set to debut in the United States as a limited preview under their new Google AI Ultra subscription plan, priced at $250 per month. Further information regarding broader rollout plans remains forthcoming.
