Spotify is rolling out an eagerly anticipated feature for its free-tier subscribers—an option that has been highly requested since its inception nearly two decades ago: the freedom to select any song they wish. Gone are the tedious days of hunting for a track and endlessly skipping until it appears in a Spotify-generated playlist.
Now, free-tier users have multiple options to select songs: they can search within the app, choose from the interface directly, or click on links shared by others. Additionally, free users can access podcasts, generate playlists, and listen to their selected tracks without the previous limitation of “six skips per hour.”
However, certain restrictions remain for free Spotify accounts. Notably, users will still encounter advertisements. Additionally, there’s a limitation on how many minutes of on-demand music can be streamed, the inability to create queues for tracks, and lack of access to Spotify’s new “AI DJ” function. (Not a significant loss, as many would agree.)
Furthermore, free users will miss out on another new feature that will only be available to paid subscribers: lossless audio.
Premium Subscribers Set to Enjoy Lossless Audio
Perks for “Premium” Spotify users are also being upgraded. The most notable enhancement is the long-awaited introduction of lossless audio, which is set to be launched across more than 50 Spotify markets from now until October. Lossless audio provides streaming files that are exact replicas of the original sound sources.
In addition, premium users will gain the ability to send private messages, facilitating easier music sharing, and customize transitions between tracks in their playlists.
