Apple’s WWDC 2025: Device Compatibility Updates
During the recent WWDC 2025 keynote, Apple introduced a plethora of exciting features for its upcoming software versions including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, and watchOS 26. However, not every Apple device will be upgraded. While Apple generally provides long-term support for its products, there are some devices that will not receive future updates. Below is a brief overview to help you determine if your devices will stay up-to-date after this fall.
Three iPhones Excluded from iOS 26
So far, it’s fortunate that an old iPhone XS Max was given away recently, as it is among the three models that will not support iOS 26:
-
iPhone XR
-
iPhone XS

One iPad Left Behind for iPadOS 26
On the iPad side, the outlook is largely positive, except for those using the iPad (7th generation), which will miss out on iPadOS 26. However, all other iPads running iPadOS 18 will be eligible for the upgrade this fall.
Majority of Intel Macs Will Not Receive Updates
The trend of phasing out Intel Macs continues, with numerous models excluded from the upcoming macOS Tahoe upgrade. Listed below are the affected models:
-
MacBook Air (2020, Intel)
-
MacBook Pro (2018, all configurations)
-
MacBook Pro (2019, both 13-inch and 15-inch)
-
MacBook Pro (2020, Intel, 2 Thunderbolt ports)
-
Mac mini (2018)
-
iMac (2019)
-
iMac Pro (2017)
Interestingly, the macOS Tahoe will be available for the 2020 MacBook Pro featuring four Thunderbolt ports. This creates a disconnect for users of the two-port variant, who will not receive the update. While Apple has not clarified its reasoning, it appears central processing capabilities may play a role. The two-port models are equipped with an older 8th-gen 1.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, while their more advanced counterparts come with a 10th-gen 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor. This distinction likely explains the lack of support for the two-port model.
Apple Watch Compatibility Status
On a positive note, Apple has maintained support for all Apple Watch models compatible with watchOS 11, which will be upgraded to watchOS 16. Even though certain devices are not receiving the latest iterations, Apple may still provide periodic security patches or minor updates for them.
