Prime Day is in full effect, presenting an overwhelming array of choices for spending your money. For Android enthusiasts in the market for a new device, an exceptional offer awaits: the 128GB model of the Google Pixel 9 is priced at $549 (down from $799), marking a historic low according to price tracking tools. This discount is compelling enough to prompt an upgrade from my Pixel 6A.
The Pixel 9 includes 12GB of RAM, a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and runs on the Android 14 OS. DailyHackly’s tech editor Michelle Ehrhardt has praised the Pixel 9, suggesting that you may not even miss the additional features of the Pixel 9 Pro, which also sees a $250 discount. Despite some issues with AI features, improvements are expected over time; the critical aspect is the hardware, and Michelle refers to this as the best smartphone Google has introduced to date.
PCMag’s “excellent” review indicates that the battery can endure nearly 12 hours. The primary camera is equipped with a 50MP lens, and there’s a 48MP ultra-wide camera offering a 123-degree field of view—similar to the Pro variants—but it contains a single-zone laser detection autofocus sensor (the Pro utilizes a multi-zone sensor).
If currently using the Pixel 8, the upgrades may not be drastically noticeable. Conversely, if transitioning from an older model or switching from a non-Pixel device, the 9 has plenty to offer. One significant advantage of Pixel phones is their extended software support for several years. The Pixel 6A continues to receive updates and numerous AI features that keep the device feeling new even after years, with the most recent updates having been released last month (for GoPro users, it allows you to control your GoPro with the Pixel).
What do you think about this offer?
Ultimately, at such an advantageous price, not upgrading would be a missed opportunity (the cart is being loaded as this is being written). With the Pixel 9, users will receive a quality smartphone that will continue to receive software updates for many years—up to seven years.
